Science Film-Making Competition to be held at Goa Science Festival on 16-20 January 2018
The 3 rd edition of SCI-FFI GOA FILM FESTIVAL 2018 will take place on the 16 th to 20th of January 2018.
This Science Film Festival is organised by Vidnyan Parishad Goa, an institution that aims to promote science
filmmaking culture in Goa. This annual event is supported by the Department of Science & Technology, Govt.
of Goa and Entertainment Society of Goa and Goa College of Art.
The Science Film Making Competition is an attractive part of the SCI-FFI festival. The competition is in
two categories of films upto 5 minutes duration and over 5 minutes. The first prize for Best Film is Rs 25,000.
There are cash prizes for three Best Films, Best Direction/Research presentation, and best Cinematography,
Editing and Design.
Since this competition aims to boost the culture of science films, all the films submitted should be
related to science and technology. The subject matter should be related to any aspect of science pursued in
Goa, like research, analysis or innovations or even personalities from the field of science & technology. Films that inspire, exhibit, express or acknowledge science fit the basic selection criteria for this contest.
Multiple entries are allowed but each will require to be submitted with separate application form,
registration and in separate DVD or pen drive, preferably in the HD format. Films in language other than
English, should carry English subtitles. All entries must be accompanied by film production stills/slides properly
labeled for use in the festival promotion. Each film must be an original work by the participant. Each
participant has to submit a letter stating that it is his/her original work and not copied in any sense.
The last date of film submission is the 12th of January 2018.
After the registration SCI-FFI team can help students finalize topics for their films and introduce
participants to researchers and institutions and help with coordination.SCI-FFI will also organize an orientation
program by a renowned science filmmaker for all the selected participants and their faculties of Dept of Mass
Comm./ Fine Arts from colleges in Goa. This is a special event for participants to acquire specific skills and
keen understanding in the field of science filmmaking.

Press report of the science filmmaking workshop
The inaugural of the science filmmaking workshop was organized on 5 th Dec at the Goa College of Art campus. The two days workshop was organized by the vidnyan Parishad Goa as part of the science film festival of India. Over 60 participants registered for the workshop.
As a part of the inaugural program Shri Suhas Godse, President, vidnyan Parishad Goa explained the motive behind organizing the workshop and requested the participants to take tips on filmmaking from the expert and participate in the science film competition to win prizes during SCI-FFI 2018.
Shri Rajendra Talak, vice chairman ESG congratulated the organizers in organising a meaningful workshop. He requested the participants not to focus on page 3 entertainment but to create content on science. He also elaborated on the film finance scheme wherein selected films are eligible for grants from Government of Goa. He offered full support of ESG to such meaningful workshops
Shri Mahesh Vengurlekar, principal of Goa college of art highlighted on the fact that there was little being done on science films although it was need of the hour. And due to which he has full support of his institution to conduct this workshop and assured that his film students will make films on science as part of their assignment. He exhorted the participants to learn from this workshop and become a professional instead of being an amateur by putting into practice the teachings.

Inaugural Ceremony Pre-Fest activities of SCI-FFI Science Film Festival of India 2018
The Inauguration of the Pre festival activity of SCI-FFI 2018 science film festival was held in Vasantrao Dempo Higher Secondary School of Science, Arts and Commerce on 10th October 2017. The student and teacher were gathered in huge number in the audio visual room. The ceremony was honored by the presence of DR Sunil Singh Director of NIO
The function commenced with the invocation song by the students of the Higher Sec followed by the screening of the promo film of SCI-FFI 2018.
The Principal Mrs. Rupa Khope then escorted the chief guest in the lighting of the lamp. The Students then presented flowers to our special guest as a token of respect. Mrs Rupa Khope in the addressing of gathering, spoke about different modes of education and how The Aam Janta can learn basic science through the means of films. it helps students to be creative and inquisitive. Abdul Kalam said that you can be a great scientist by only asking questions.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Sunil Singh who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee of SCI FII 2018 said that it was an honour to be involved in organising such an event which creates interest and focus on Science through the medium of Films. He advised the Vidnyan Parishad Goa a unit of the Vijnana Bharati and Co-host of SCI FII to take an initiative and promote production of films on Science.
Addressing the students, Mr. Levinson Martins Dir. DST Govt of Goa , motivated the students to work hard and put in efforts to achieve their dreams and take the benefit of interacting with the Senior Scientists during SCI FII.
Speaking on the occasion Shri Jayantrao Sahasrabuddhe the National Organising Secretary of Vidnyan Bharati informed that the SCI FII is organised to cultivate Scientific temperament and create Scientific attitude in common people lacking opportunities in our country , reminding the students that they should have social responsibility towards their fellow countrymen to make their lives happy and prosperous, he informed that Vidnyan Bharati has taken efforts through various activities and medium to cultivate Scientific thinking in everyday life.
Shri Suhas Godse President of Vidyan Parishad Goa informed that as a prelude to SCI FII 2018 the organisation will reach out to at least 100 schools in Goa through various activities and that scientific films aid black board teaching and have strong structure and that the flow of science related events are well recorded in them, combining entertainment and education is more encouraging, adding that things imagined with logic have a potential to realise tomorrow.
The function was followed by a presentation by Dr.Ramesh kumar, Chief Scientist of NIO on ‘a Journey to the icy continent of Antartica’ and screening of two documentary films
